Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Chapter Design Challenge

The Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Chapter
Design Challenge is back after a highly successful pilot, giving students the
chance to tackle real-world engineering problems through an SDG-focused,
people-centred design approach.
This year’s Challenge is set in Cape York,
Australia, where teams will develop sustainable, context-driven solutions for
remote communities, considering environmental, social, and long-term impacts.

University of Pécs - Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology of the University of Pécs is one of the most dynamically developing higher education institutions in the region. Our range of training programmes covers virtually the entire spectrum of engineering, information technology, and architecture. With approximately 3,500 students, more than 50 years of professional experience, and our renovated and expanded university campus, and being one of the most colourful institutions and a leading player in Hungarian technical higher education, we are also a prominent centre of the country’s engineering life.

Our eight Bachelor’s programmes cover the fields of engineering and art in architectural engineering (EN, HU), civil engineering (HU), architectural design (HU), mechanical engineering (HU), environmental engineering (HU), electrical engineering (EN, HU), computer science engineering (EN, HU), and industrial design engineering (HU). Our Master’s programmes train the country’s best professionals in the fields of architecture OTM (EN, HU), architectural engineering (EN, HU), interior and spatial design (EN, HU), architectural design (HU), computer science engineering (EN, HU), structural engineering (EN, HU), urban systems engineering (HU), and biomedical engineering, the latter available only in English for both Hungarian and international applicants. Starting in autumn 2026, a BSc programme in mechanical engineering taught in English will be added to our range of courses available to international students. We also engage our students in experience-based training, innovative research projects, and small-group instruction. In September 2015, practice-oriented dual training programmes were launched with the participation of industrial companies and corporations within the BSc programmes of Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. From 2025 onwards, the dual training programme is also available at Master’s level and to students enrolled in part-time training. Our postgraduate specialist training programmes are designed to respond to rapid changes in market demands.

In accordance with the trilateral cooperation agreement between PTE MIK, the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers, and Engineers Europe (formerly FEANI), the University’s technical higher education programmes are included in the European Engineering Education Database (EEED) operated by Engineers Europe, facilitating the recognition of the degrees of international students in countries outside Europe. The Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in architectural engineering are fully and unconditionally accredited by the UNESCO-UIA International Union of Architects, managed by the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). Our architecture degree programme is also a full member of the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE).

The 20,000 m2 educational and research building complex was refurbished in 2007-2008, together with the on-campus dormitory with double rooms and bathrooms, accommodating 800 students. In 2019, large-scale developments took place at the Faculty: as part of the Modern Cities Program, the infrastructure was expanded with two new wings. Architecture studios and open creative spaces were set up in one wing, while the other houses state-of-the-art laboratories supporting mechanical engineering training.

Close contact with industrial and construction enterprises, as well as events organised in cooperation with partner companies, help students acquire marketable skills. The Pollack EXPO and MIK Partners events, which provide platforms for professional exhibitions and conferences, are examples of such networking opportunities. Faculty international relations are also developing dynamically; international short-term programmes and joint graduate programmes with our partners were added to the curriculum over the past decade. From 2025, our Faculty has been awarded another prestigious international recognition: the Huawei ICT Academy Training Centre Certification.
