Autumn programs in Wuhan, China: Biennial, Conference, Innovation
Invited by the Hubei University of Technology (Partner University of University of Pécs), delegation of the University of Pécs, Faculty of Engineering and IT, Institute of Architecture visited Wuhan City of China in November 2019. Prof. dr. Gabriella Medvegy, Dean, dr. Donát Rétfalvi Head of Institute and Ms. Kata Varjú, 5th year MA student attended the event together with Prof. Dr. Ákos Hutter, who is a permanent representative of UP at HBUT, School of Arts and Design, Wuhan.
The first event of the professional program series was the opening ceremony of the 5th Wuhan Biennial and Design Day on 1st of November. The venue for the event was in Qingdao Luping and Packing Factory, founded in 1905. Currently It is now one of Wuhan's early industrial buildings retaining its former form. Recognizing the importance of the architectural heritage the building was protected and received a new function. It has won the "UNESCO 2019 Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Protection Honours Award" for its design concept and high quality of construction work.
The event was accompanied by an exhibition from a series of works by Hubei University of Technology - School of Art and Design. The exhibition was visited by professors of Hubei University of Technology and their international guests.
The main exhibition hall of the event hosted the joint conceptual plan of Zhang Qian (PhD student at UP FEIT Marcel Breuer Doctoral School and HBUT innovation class teacher) and Wu Hao about the regional development of Wuhan Nanhu. This architectural plan has won the 3rd Award of the 1st Wuhan Creative Design Competition.
The program continued on the 3rd of November at the Hubei University of Technology School of Art and Design, where the 2019 International Conference and Exhibition "Design and Education for Sustainable Urban Development" were held in conjunction with the "2019 Wuhan Design Day". Significant universities were invited for the event, including University of Pécs, Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, National University of Indonesia, French Academy of Art and Design Dijon, Tshighua University in Beijing and University of Wisconsin.
The welcome-speech by Liu Defu, President of the Hubei University of Technology opened the conference. He welcomed both Chinese and foreign speakers.
Prof. dr. Ákos Hutter (UP FEIT, leader of the Innovation Class - HBUT) emphasized the importance of the cooperation between the two universities and the newly established international education programs in his welcome speech. Following the solemn welcoming speeches, the cooperation agreements of the two new joint programs and the doctoral schools were signed between our faculty and HBUT.
Dr. Donát Rétfalvi and Kata Varjú - as invited international speakers - presented two sustainable projects of the Institute of Architecture.
The Hungarian Nest+ prototype house (featured prominently in the Solar Decathlon Europe International Architectural Innovation Contest) draws attention to the importance of the environmentally conscious architecture and design facing the 21st century climate issues.
The „Need for Living” Project linked to Ms. Bianka Szintén, PhD student at UP-FEIT Marcel Breuer Doctoral School. She aimed to answer two questions that address today's social issues: Can we create a new communication tool? Furthermore: how can we respond to the challenges of the 21st century communities in the language of architecture?
The projects were also presented at the exhibition in the lobby of the campus, together with the works of the Innovation Class founded commonly by UP FEIT and HBUT.
