Pen and Needle – Punk and New Wave in Yugoslavia | Aleksandar Zograf & Gordana Basta

Date:
A special afternoon at the House of Arts and Literature (Művészetek és Irodalom Háza): contemporary alternative comics, handcrafted embroidery, and the 1980s Yugoslav underground music subculture all in one place! The event starts at 5:00 PM with an introduction to the exhibition by the creators, followed by Aleksandar Zograf’s talk and slide show.

(The event will be held in English!)

PROGRAM:

“Pen and Needle” – Exhibition of Embroidered Comics
What does an underground comic look like when embroidered by hand? Serbian alternative comics artist Aleksandar Zograf’s drawings have been brought to fabric through the meticulous needlework of Gordana Basta.
In a fast-paced digital world, embroidery is a true “slow art” form that demands patience and dedication. Woven into threads, Zograf’s direct, modern illustrations take on an entirely new dimension: the spontaneity of the sketches remains, while every stroke gains tangible texture and physical presence.

Punk and New Wave in Yugoslavia – Lecture by Aleksandar Zograf
Yugoslavia hovered on the border between East and West, a unique position that left a deep mark on its culture and music scene. Alongside comics, Saša Rakezić (better known by his artist name Aleksandar Zograf) was also actively involved in rock journalism: in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he published his own fanzines and wrote for Yugoslavia’s leading music magazine, Džuboks.
Through a slide show presentation, he explores the explosion of Yugoslav punk and new wave music that flourished after Tito’s death, the era's youth subcultures, and the defining bands of the time—all set in the pivotal years shortly before the country’s dissolution.
