During the spring semester at UP FEIT, the “Construction Camp” preparatory course is an elective open to both Hungarian and international students. The goal of the course is to develop timber architecture solutions to a specific problem. The best of these designs will be built during Week 0 of the following semester. Students follow the entire process from the initial concept to completion, which greatly contributes to the development of nuanced architectural thinking. They gain not only theoretical but also practical experience, and ultimately experience the satisfaction of seeing their project come to life.

This year’s assignment focused on the development of the campus’s underutilized green spaces. The completed project proposed a “floating carpet” that subtly responds to the topography and serves as a symbolic focal point for the shaded area beneath the chestnut trees. The strength of the winning project lies in the inseparable unity between the design and the technique employed.
A technical challenge was the construction of curved beams that follow the slope of the terrain; we ultimately achieved this by gluing together 13 pieces of 6-mm-thick plywood and using a custom OSB template.

The completed design object has been serving the comfort of UP FEIT students since the first week of the fall semester of 2026.
